To every nurse, midwife, nursing associate, student nurse, student midwife and student nursing associate across England
I’m reaching out to you for your views, insight and your vision as we begin to shape the next era of nursing and midwifery in England.
A new professional strategy is being developed – with you, for you, and for our patients and communities.

Reflecting the breadth of expertise and experience across our professions, we will set out a clear, compelling, long-term vision for nursing and midwifery in England, how we will deliver the commitments in the 10 Year Health Plan, including elective reform and reducing waiting lists, and continue to lead and deliver changes to transform health and care for our changing population.
This is more than a document – the strategy represents a defining moment for our professions; a collective opportunity to reflect who we are now and to shape the future of nursing and midwifery practice, education, research and leadership together.
As we look to the future, we must make sure our professions reflect the ever-changing world in which we work, including the advancement of science and technology, and set out how we will continue to evolve, adapt, and lead to deliver the changes we want to see for our patients and communities.
From career development to flexible opportunities and wellbeing – the strategy will also look at how we can better support you throughout your career and ensure that nursing and midwifery are modern careers of choice for more people.
Nurses, midwives and nursing associates are at the heart of every community in England; highly-skilled professionals delivering care, advocating for patients and families and providing clinical leadership, research and education across all settings.
It’s vital that this strategy reflects your diverse experiences, roles and aspirations – wherever you work, whatever your role, and at every stage of your career.
Whether you work in primary care or the community, the NHS, social care, public health, the independent sector, voluntary sector, health and justice, education, research, or the military – your experiences and insights matter.
So, I’m asking you to please get involved. Share your thoughts, ideas and aspirations by completing our survey before it closes on Monday 29 September, and encourage your colleagues to do the same.
Complete the survey.

Together, let’s shape the future of nursing and midwifery in England.
Thank you, as always, for everything you do.
