Maria has worked in respiratory medicine since qualifying as a registered nurse (RN) in 2010. She began her career on an acute respiratory ward, becaming a senior nurse within 18 months of qualifying . She then gained experience a research nurse before becoming a respiratory nurse specialist in 2014, working within the local Integrated COPD team. She developed a standardised method to implement COPD care bundles for patients being admitted to hospital.
She began working in Primary care within the private sector as a respiratory nurse advisor. This allowed Maria to work within different ICBs, providing mentorship and education for practice nurses, GPs and other allied health professionals. She regularly delivered respiratory education modules on a 1:1 basis and in larger groups. She jointly developed a pathway for acute asthma admissions to ensure appropriate review with a respiratory nurse specialist post discharge. This aimed to reduce the likelihood of re-admission to hospital and referring patients who were suitable to the Difficult Asthma / Severe Asthma service at University of Southampton Hospital Foundation Trust.
Maria is currently working as a clinical respiratory nurse specialist & non-medical prescriber at a large Primary Care Network (PCN) in Southampton. She has played a pivotal role in the implementation of a new respiratory pathway, which includes the re-introduction of Spirometry post COVID19. She supports and mentors practice nurses and HCAs within the PCN as well as providing reviews for complex respiratory patients with multiple co-morbidities. She also works closely within the Urgent Care Team alongside Advanced Nurse Practitioners to deliver urgent reviews for respiratory patients, providing acute care and further optimisation of their treatment.
Maria has completed level 6 and 7 courses in COPD, Asthma, Respiratory Diagnostics and Non-Medical Prescribing. She is also a previous winner of the Association of Respiratory Nurses (ARNS) Respiratory Rising Star award in 2016. I am a respiratory nurse specialist at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS trust. I have worked in the NHS since qualifying in 2001. I joined the respiratory nursing team in 2011 and have developed an extensive skills and knowledge base of supporting patients with a wide range of lung conditions. For many of those years I have also been the lead of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service for South Tyneside. I am passionate about improving patient outcomes, and having worked in PR for many years, I know the difference this intervention can make for our respiratory patients. I am a very passionate advocate of PR and have shared my knowledge to promote the importance of PR and other non-pharmacological interventions with not only our patients, but our stakeholders across secondary care, the Integrated Care Board and primary care. I am also the chair of the North East and North Cumbria ICB PR working group.
I have recently completed a level 7 course in addressing Health inequalities, which has grown my interest in this area and I am keen to explore this further.
I am absolutely delighted to be the new Pulmonary Rehabilitation lead for ARNS. I have been a member of ARNS for a few years, and I have always just watched from a far. But when this opportunity came up, I felt that it was the right time to step forward with my voice. I believe my passion for PR, clinical expertise, leadership experience, and commitment to high-quality respiratory care would enable me to make a positive and meaningful contribution in this role. I am looking forward to the challenge to be involved in national discussions on PR.

My current role involves managing the sleep related breathing disorder service and inpatient non invasive ventilation. This has led me to be newly appointed as the diagnostics sub committee lead for sleep and ventilation.
I have presented abstracts and spoken sessions and regional and national conferences and have had my work published in the nursing press.
I won the Nursing Times Respiratory Nurse Award for my work with patient’s who have asthma and require reasonable adjustments due to a learning disability. I have now rolled this reasonable adjustment clinic out to all respiratory patients and my work has been shared and adopted nationally.
